AB OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this survey was made to examine the dentist's
knowledge and attitudes to AIDS/HIV and the actual infection control
procedures of dental instruments in Japan. METHODS: The questionnaire
asked 49 questions concerning dental clinic instruments, infection
control procedures, knowledge of dentists about AIDS/HIV, attitudes to
AIDS/HIV patients and so on. RESULTS: To date (January 6, 1994), we got
197 responses which were answered by the Japanese dentists working in
various areas of Japan. The average age of respondents was 41 years old.
Two dentists answered that they treated AIDS patients in their dental
offices. Over 80% of the responders believe AIDS/HIV patients would come
to their dental offices in the future. Despite over 70% believe that
they are responsible as dentist to treat AIDS/HIV patients from the
moral point of view, only about 20% are willing to treat AIDS/HIV
patients. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS: There were statistical significant
differences between the answers of old and young dentists conducting the
chi square test, such as use of sterilizable (autoclavable) handpieces
(p < 0.05), use of disposable needles (p < 0.01), will to treat AIDS
patients positively (p < 0.05) etc. In this study, we found the
statistical significant differences by age of dentists in the answers
for 13 questions.
